WE BUILD COMMUNITIES THROUGH LITERACY AND LEARNING

IMPROVED LEARNING = IMPROVED LIVES.

For over 20 years, the Further Education Society of Alberta (FESA) has worked to build community

capacity and address gaps in Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) development throughout Canada.

Providing free adult foundational learning and family literacy programs and training, we support community-based literacy initiatives in over 750 communities across Canada. Our work builds strong individuals, strong families, and strong communities through literacy and learning.

Unfortunately, in many parts of Canada people are unable to fulfill their potential because of a basic lack of access to education. We work to change that by offering community based adult foundational learning and family literacy programming. We also work with community stakeholders, offering training to develop their services, expand their reach, and equip their staff with skills necessary to deliver their own foundational learning services.

In cooperation with grassroots community agencies, we respond to the learning needs of vulnerable groups. Challenges that these learners face include poverty, abuse, low-literacy, single-parenting, recent immigration, lack of support systems, unemployment, learning disabilities, addictions, and unfamiliarity with community resources and/or formalized systems.

Land Acknowledgement

FESA acknowledges that the land upon which we work and call home is on the traditional territories of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Îyâxe Nakoda Nations (Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney), the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (Districts 4, 5, and 6), and all people who make their homes in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

We are grateful to work on the territory that situates Calgary, which is known as Mohkinstsis by the Blackfoot, Guts’ists’i by Tsuut’ina, and Wîchîspa by the Îyâxe Nakoda, as we endeavor to build a more literate and learning society allowing all to reach their potential.
